In the Valley | Psalm 84:5-7 (ESV)

Derreck Linder

5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage. 6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka, they make it a place of springs; the autumn rains also cover it with pools. 7 They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

Who is your strength in? This Psalm talks about the journey that the Jewish people would take to Jerusalem. On this journey they would pass through the Valley of Baca; a dry, desolate, and barren place.

It’s the nature of life that we all will pass through desert places on our journey. As we go through the valleys we have a choice to set your mind on things above— whatever is pure, lovely, excellent, praiseworthy — What we think about matters. Even when my current circumstances may be in the valley we have to choose to fix our mind on God.

When we are going through the valley it’s easy to get swallowed up by everything around us, but the valley is not the destination! We all have a destination and the valley is just part of the journey. So if you’re in the valley today look for the blessings, and take hope that it is not forever. This too shall pass.
